As the hysteria driven lockdowns continue and politicians apply the lockdown rules unevenly, people are starting to notice a disturbing trend happening in New York due to the mayor’s strange application of the targeted lockdown zones. Since the pandemic began, the Jewish community in New York City as been a target of city officials (led by Cuomo and DeBlasio), to which they claim the orthodox Jewish community is not obeying the mask mandates. A claim that doesn’t hold up to scrutiny when examined by those that are not partisan. In fact, videos and images are popping up on Twitter that document the totalitarian tactics used by DeBlasio and Cuomo.
Lawyers for the state argued that the restrictions did not unfairly target the Orthodox Jewish community, saying it was not a violation of the Constitution to acknowledge that religious gatherings have a higher risk of spreading the virus.
“The First Amendment’s protections do not require that the government ignore reality and common sense,” a lawyer for the state wrote in a court filing on October 9th.
Lawyers for Agudath Israel, an umbrella group with affiliated synagogues around the country, had argued that the new rules were unconstitutional. Orthodox Jews are disproportionately affected, they said, because they are prohibited from driving during religious holidays and cannot travel to synagogues in neighborhoods with fewer restrictions.
The judge’s decision means that Mr. Cuomo can impose the new restrictions, which went into effect on October 9th, as the lawsuit progresses. Anyone who violates the order against mass gatherings can be subject to a daily fine of $15,000. And this doesn’t even include the forced closure of a park in the Jewish neighborhood, where city officials actually padlocked the park’s gates. This was met with opposition, where members of the community took bolt cutters to the lock themselves.
The restrictions were intended to curb worrisome outbreaks of the coronavirus in Brooklyn, Queens and New York City’s northern suburbs, including several areas with large Orthodox populations, but those restrictions became moot once the CDC and the WHO’s own data showed how benign the virus really is.
A video was circulating Twitter (to which now has disappeared) that showed a man taking pictures of a building’s windows where Jewish worshipers were most likely gathering to pray. But since then, more videos have been uploaded to the net showcasing the uneven rules being applied.
Clearly something is wrong here. The signs are disturbing when taken into historical context, because these same arbitrary restrictions have occurred before – in 1930s Germany. Yes, it might sound like hyperbole, but there is no denying the heavily unbalanced rules being applied here. And since the pandemic itself has become nothing but a political battle, there’s no excusing the terrifying despotism DeBlasio and Cuomo are exhibiting right now.
