Larry Harris, 66, of Arizona, is accused of tailing three National Guard vans from a gas station, later claiming to police he did so because he thought a kidnapped woman and child were inside the vans, according to cops.

After successfully stopping the convoy, Harris identified himself as a detective and demanded to search the vehicles, Idalou Police Chief Eric Williams said in a statement.

Harris then ordered the guard members out of their vehicles at gunpoint, authorities said.

Police said Harris was speaking erratically when he was arrested. It was not immediately clear what led him to believe that kidnapping victims were being transported in the vans.

Harris is facing several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful restraint of 11 National Guard members and impersonating a public servant.

He was being held in jail Tuesday on $44,000 bond.
